"Becoming a member of Survivors Abreast has been an array of emotions for me. Pride in what I can do and for the amazing women on my team.
Happiness in the fun we have together. And sadness knowing that there are so many women out there battling breast cancer."
~ Diane Benson, Team member
We are a team of women who are survivors of breast cancer. The Peterborough Regional Health Centre Foundation, our fund raising agency, as well as local physicians and many dedicated individuals in the community have contributed to making our dragon boat team a reality.
Survivors Abreast purpose is to:
• Raise awareness about breast cancer;
• Demonstrate the overwhelming benefits of rehabilitation and recreational exercise for survivors; • Encourage and support people living with breast cancer to lead full and active lives by sharing experiences, strengths and hope; and • Support local care facilities and/or breast cancer research.
"For some reason, dragon boat racing is the avenue breast cancer survivors have chosen to get support and to support themselves. It's a curious choice, but it's really growing."
~ Len Minty, Former Survivors Abreast Coach
"This is a good focal point for breast cancer survivors. You combine the physical fitness advantages, the overall wellness and the rise in awareness for this and it's a great thing."
~ Dr. John Rowsom, Chief of Surgery
